The first time I heard this song, I was on my way to work. The entire song is beautiful, proclaiming Jesus as Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness. Declaring Who He is and offering my worship through song made this an instant favorite. The ending is what hit me though. Stop reading this and go listen to the song –Way Maker then come back to finish reading so I don’t spoil the moment for you. I love the imagery in this song so thought I would meditate on what each of these words describe about Jesus.
WAY MAKER
In John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” The word way means a method, style, or manner of doing something, and a road, track, path, or street for traveling along. The word maker means a person or thing that makes or produces something, and (IN THE DICTIONARY) God; the Creator. So putting those two words together is beautiful. Jesus (God) makes a path for us. Jesus produces a method for how we are to live. He lays the road in front of us and we walk in it.
MIRACLE WORKER
I love reading the Gospels because of the miracles Jesus performed. I imagine what it would have been like to see the healings, to taste the wine, to walk on the water like Peter. “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know…” Acts 2:22
Jesus turned water to wine, fed thousands of people, cast out evil spirits, healed the blind, deaf, sick, injured, and infirmed, he controlled the water and other elements of nature, caught a large amount of fish, and raised people from the dead, including Himself. “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books which were written.” John 21:25
I love hearing stories of how God is performing miracles today. As a cancer survivor, I can look back and see His hand on me throughout treatment and recovery. His Name is above cancer!
PROMISE KEEPER
I love the promise in Jeremiah 29:11-13 “For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” God fulfilled His promise in sending His Son – “And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘Thou art My Son; today I have begotten Thee.’” Acts 13:33
Paul begins his second letter to Timothy with these words, “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus.” II Timothy 1:1 The promise of life in Christ Jesus is explained in Ephesians 3:20-21. “Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.”
LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overpower it.” John 1:1-5
“Again therefore Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12
“Jesus therefore said to them, ‘For a little while longer the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he goes.” John 12:35 As followers of Jesus, we don’t have to walk in darkness because of Acts 1:8. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
EVEN WHEN I DON’T SEE IT
The radio version cuts out the middle, ‘Even when I don’t see it, You’re working’ and I think that is such an important thing to remember. We don’t see what He sees, but He is working for His glory and to draw each of us closer to Himself.
Will you allow Him to lift you up out of depression? Out of loneliness? Will you lean in to Him as you walk through disease? Cancer? Lift up His Name, Declare His sovereignty in your situation today!
Blessings to you today, friend, as you reflect on Who your Maker is!
