This little tooth fairy pillow has been a life saver for us and it was so easy to make! I have a kiddo that moves everything around in bed throughout the night. He wakes up fairly easy and has a bazillion stuffed animals on his bed. The tooth fairy was really worried about how this would all work out.
Then I remembered a joke we played on a friend who had his wisdom teeth removed. In his after surgery, drugged up state, he told us he needed to give his wisdom teeth to the tooth fairy. A bunch of us got together and found a frilly pillow, wrote a letter, and gave him some coins to decorate his desk at work! I wish I had a picture of it. He didn’t remember his request, but he sure played it up and was excited about the lengths we went to for him.
All this got me thinking about making a personalized pillow for my son. I let him pick out the fabric, his two favorite colors: gold and green. Then I added a pocket in the form of a tooth and embroidered his name on the pillow. You could also personalize this with heat transfer vinyl (HTV).
Tooth Fairy Pillow Materials Needed:
- 2 squares of 9.5 by 9.5 inch fabric (can be 2 materials or 1)
- 1 length of ribbon 12 to 24 inches
- 1 felt tooth cutout
- Pillow stuffing
- Scissors
- Thread
- Needle/sewing machine
Getting Started
Cut two 9.5 squares out of your fabric. Cut out the felt tooth. There are two options for this, either a finished or unfinished edge. It is pretty simple to create a finished edge using a satin stitch or zigzag stitch. Once you have that done, just cut around the outer edge without cutting the thread. Then, center the felt tooth on your pillow and sew it into place.
Tooth Fairy Pillow Personalization
Embroider or use HTV (heat transfer vinyl) to personalize the pillow. This is completely optional, but it just gives it a nice finish, in my opinion. I really enjoy embroidery, but sometimes it takes a bit more time.
So for this second pillow I made for a friend, I went with HTV and was done in a few minutes. If you are making this for more than one child, you could just use Tooth Fairy SVG on the pillow.
Pin Ribbon in Place
Lay the front side of the pillow with the tooth facing right side up. Pin the ribbon to the pillow, 1 inch from the corners.
Pin Layers Together
Place back side on top of the front, wrong side facing up, so that the right sides are together. Carefully remove pins from the ribbon to have the pins on top, pinning both layers and the ribbon together.
Sew all around the pillow using a quarter-inch seam allowance, removing the pins as you go and leaving 4 inches open at the bottom in the center. This is so that you can turn the pillow right side out.
Trim Corners
Carefully trim the corners, being sure not to cut into the stitching. This helps you have clean corners. Then, turn the pillow right side out. Use a ruler or point turner to push out the corners.
Iron the pillow so the seams at the bottom close nicely and line up with the other seam.
Stuff and Close the Tooth Fairy Pillow
Stuff your pillow until it is full, but not too fluffy. You still have to be able to sew the bottom closed! Either pin and machine sew this small section with matching threads or hand sew an invisible stitch. That’s it! You have a very cute tooth fairy pillow for your kiddo to use. No more tripping over toys or searching under the pillow for this tooth fairy!
My son is always happy to find a gold coin in his tooth fairy pillow! Is that the going rate for other tooth fairies? He got double for the first tooth and then one for the rest.
Here’s a fun project for you and your kiddos, making patriotic t-shirts.
