Make a St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Painting
This shamrock painting is such a cute idea to add to your St. Patrick’s Day decor! We made 3 designs – one with just a shamrock, one with a border and one with a background design. My nephew loves to create and this was a fun way for him to express his creativity.
This is perfect for kids who don’t like messes, because you use a wooden sponge paint dauber to dip the paint one dot at a time. You could also use a pencil eraser, like we did for the patriotic T-shirt. It is easy enough for young children to join in the fun!
Gather Supplies:
- Wooden Sponge Paint Daubers or Pencils
- Art Canvas
- Green and White Acrylic Paint (optional yellow / gold paint)
- Freezer Paper Shape Cut-Out
- Iron
- Painters Tape
Shamrock Painting
To begin your own artistic masterpiece, cut out a shamrock shape with freezer paper. Use the outline of the shamrock (the cut out) to fill in with paint for your design. Iron the glossy side down on the canvas. Create different shades of green by diluting with white paint. Use the dauber to paint the shamrock and use different shades to fill in the shape. Allow the paint to dry completely and peel off the freezer paper.
Shamrock Painting with a Border
After the Shamrock is dry, use painters tape to create a straight line and use the dauber to paint the border.
Shamrock Painting with Gold Background
My nephew wanted to make a gold background for his shamrock. In order to do this, iron the shamrock shape to the canvas. Use the yellow / gold paint to fill in the background. Make sure to paint over the edges of the freezer paper so that the gold will be visible after the green shamrock is painted. Allow the gold paint to dry and remove the shamrock freezer paper.
Use the shamrock cut out (we just re-used the same cut out! He was painting gold while I was painting green – we let them dry – then he used my freezer paper!) Again, make sure to get the green shape of the shamrock by painting over the edges of the freezer paper. Allow the green to dry and remove the freezer paper.
Two different designs
