Time is such a difficult concept for younger children. My husband takes many short trips as part of his job, so my son does fine when he is away for one or two weeks. When we were explaining that daddy would be gone for a year, it was obvious that he was thinking it would be another one of those short trips. We had shared this information with our church body, asking them to keep us in their prayers and a lady shared the idea of a kiss jar with me. The more I thought about it, the more I loved it! While this could be any candy you choose, I love telling my son to go get his kiss from daddy each night. I wrote a short little poem to place on the jar to read whenever he wants.
Kiss Poem
A kiss for each day
I have to be away.
When there are no more,
I’ll soon be at the door.
Love,
Daddy
How to:
I counted out 365 kisses (a little more than 3 bags) and placed them in this cute little jar I got here. I cut out the tag on the front with my Cricut, but you can use anything you have available. Tip: Make sure to measure the height of your jar, so you don’t have to cut off the top and bottom of your tag, like I had to do. Oops! I was excited to get it done and in a time crunch. I wanted his daddy to be able to give it to him before he left. Write the words on the paper and run it through a sticker machine to place on the outside. Another option is to tape the saying on the inside of the jar. Here is a look of the sticker before I had to cut off the top and bottom to make it fit!
He loves these sweet treats each night. It is such a great way to understand that time is passing as the kisses disappear. He has three different flavors to choose from, which gives the jar more color. We chose milk chocolate, hugs and cookies and cream! What flavors will you choose?
