What does it mean to live a life of abundance?
How would your life be different if you were living in abundance?
What does the Bible have to say about abundance?
Abundance as defined in the dictionary is a very large quantity of something – e.g., a chemical element or an animal or plant species, present in a particular area, volume, sample, etc.
Have you ever felt like there isn’t enough to go around or caught yourself in a negative mindset?
- If she gets recognition, there won’t be enough for me!
- If he is first in line, I won’t get what I need.
- Always a bridesmaid… never a bride…
- How come they can have all the kids and they don’t even seem to want them, I would love them if I could have them.
- If she joins the other team, my team won’t be successful!
I grew up with little in the area of material possessions. As I prepare for a garage sale and an upcoming move, it reminds me of my hoarding tendencies. The phrase, “I can’t get rid of that, I might need it someday” runs through my head with every pile I sort and box I pack. The reality of this mindset is fear that God will not provide for my needs. The truth is He has always provided and He has promised He will provide. I was not living in abundance and it has taken me years to begin changing my mindset!
“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19.
The enemy wants you to believe in a scarcity mentality. He will try to steal your joy when others receive blessing. He wants to kill your dreams and sabotage your purpose. “The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.” John 10:10. Jesus came to bring you life! And not just a mundane existence – life abundant! He created you WITH purpose and FOR a purpose!
God’s heart is an abundant heart! In Creation, He saw that it was good and blessed every living thing. He gave the command, “Be fruitful and multiply” to all creation! Story after story has examples of God’s heart for His people. He sent His only Son – out of the abundance of His love for us. Our God is an abundant God!
The heroes of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 lived their lives in faith of something better. They endured hardship and loss, judgement and disappointment. Their faith was not in their circumstances, because they believed in the promise of God and in the person of Jesus. “And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.” Hebrews 11:39-40
Focus on Jesus
Maybe your life isn’t what you pictured it would be. Maybe things haven’t turned out the way you planned. Turn your eyes to Jesus. He is our abundant hope. Jesus is worth the wait – the hope of Heaven – He will meet our every need. “May He grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your purpose!” Psalm 20:4. “Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
